Stories from the book of Jonah were probably my favorite growing up. I was so fascinated by that story and it’s quite obvious why. One story I was familiar with the most as a child was the story of Jonah, especially in relation to being swallowed by a fish.
It's easy to get carried away by the story and not the lessons. But guess what, I am here to give you four lessons from the Life of Jonah. I am sure these lessons will bless you.
Without further ado, let's get into the four lessons from the book of Jonah
1. Jonah was selfish and sometimes we are too
I don’t understand how God will send you to tell a nation about their sins and you refused to obey God.
Even when he agreed to go, he was angry God forgave Nineveh. In my mind, I am like Jonah are you alright?(seriously kidding)
But in the real sense, some of us are like Jonah. We do not want others to experience eternal life because of their actions towards us. For example, maybe your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. Just because of their actions towards us, we refused to tell them about the Gospel. Are we not the same as Jonah?
My dear friend, please beware of Jonah's kind of attitude and be intentional about spreading the love of God to others. At some point, it might be hard but please don't deprive someone from hearing the truth about the Gospel and receiving the same grace you enjoy.
3. Regardless of how far you have gone, God is interested in you.
When Jonah noticed that he had gone astray from God and in his assignment, God was still right there. He never left him alone or stranded.
At some point in my life too, I have gotten tired and wanted to run away from various assignments God asked me to do. But one thing I remind myself is that God is interested in me. God is merciful and he’s got us.
I want you to know that even in your dark times, God is still loving. He doesn’t want us to run away from Him but instead embrace His love at all times.
3. Prayer should be an essential part of our Christian life
I want us to understand that prayer is not what we do when we are in trouble. Prayer is our life. Pastor Emmanuel Iren always says 'Prayer is not all about what it can do for you but what it does in you'.
Likewise, whenever we pray, God is willing to answer us and he hears us always.
4. As children of God, we are on assignment
Maybe Jonah was thinking that if he should go his separate way from God's assignment, nobody will call him to order. But no, his plans failed.
Our actions can be a blessing or trouble to others.
We shouldn’t have an I don't care attitude. Our actions can even be the difference between someone getting saved or not.
We should always remember that we are all stewards in the sight of God. Be willing to shine your light and preach the gospel. We are all on an assignment to tell everyone about eternal life.
These are four lessons I learnt from the book of Jonah. Please tell us other lessons we can learn from the Life of Jonah in the comment session.
See you soon💙
